Bone Scans - About the Exams

Bone imaging scans are performed to help diagnose a variety of bone problems including trauma, infection and degenerative conditions.

Triple Phase Bone Scan:
This type of imaging will detect different pathology in the bone. Usually it is performed when Osteomyelitis is suspected.

Limited Bone Scan:
Common reasons to perform a bone scan of a limited area often include: pain not associated with infection, a patient without a history of cancer with a limited area of pain, and stress fractures or compression fracture.

DEXA:
DEXA is effective in tracking the effects of treatment for osteoporosis and other conditions that cause bone loss. DXA can also access an individual’s risk for developing fractures.

Bone SPECT:
This scan generally follows a limited bone scan, and takes 20 minutes. It gives the radiologist even more specific information about your bones.
