Chest Fluid Drainage (Thoracentesis) – How to Prepare

Prior to your thoracentesis procedure, your blood may be tested to determine how well your kidneys are functioning and whether your blood clots normally.

Once you arrive for your thoracentesis, you will be asked to change into an examination gown.

Prior to the procedure, you should report to your radiologist and technologist all medications that you are taking, including herbal supplements, and if you have any allergies, especially to anesthesia. Your physician may advise you to stop taking aspirin or a blood thinner for a specific period of time before your procedure.

Also, inform your radiologist or technologist about recent illnesses and other medical conditions.

Women should always inform their radiologist or technologist if there is any possibility that they are pregnant.

You may want to have a relative or friend accompany you and drive you home afterward.
