Abdominal Fluoroscopy- About the Exam

Abdominal fluoroscopy converts x-ray images into video images and enables Mountain Medical’s radiologists to watch and guide progress of an imaging procedure. Abdominal fluoroscopy is used to examine the stomach and the first part of the small intestine using x-ray imaging and a contrast material.

Abdominal fluoroscopy allows radiologists to see internal organs in motion. When the upper gastrointestinal tract is coated with an oral contrast material, the radiologist is able to view and assess the anatomy and function of the part of the abdomen being examined.

What you can expect during a abdominal fluoroscopy:

  • You will be asked to drink a contrast material, liquid barium.
  • You will be asked to lie flat on your back on the examination table
  • The radiologist will then use intermittent x-ray imaging to watch the barium pass through the digestive tract. Additional images may be required in oblique, prone or standing positions. The radiologist or technologist will assist you in appropriate positioning.
  • The exam table will be positioned at different angles and your stomach may be compressed to help spread the barium.
  • Once the GI tract is coated with barium, the radiologist will use the x-ray to take images.
  • An abdominal fluoroscopy is usually completed within 20 minutes.
