Laser Treatment for Varicose Veins - Venous Ablation

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins occur when the vein valves become diseased or damaged, allowing some blood to flow in the reverse direction (down the leg with gravity). Blood can overfill and distend the veins causing them to appear near the surface of the skin. They are frequently visible on the legs, sometimes bulging or bluish in coloration. Varicose veins can be painful and cause the legs to ache or feel tired and heavy at the end of the day.

How does Laser Treatment for Varicose Veins work?

The area of the leg affected is anesthetized locally and a thin laser fiber is inserted into the abnormal vein, delivering the laser energy to the affected tissue. The laser energy heats the vein, causing it to shrink and collapse. The body automatically reroutes the blood through other healthy veins.

The treatment itself takes less than one hour. Patients are excited about this treatment because there is minimal scarring and the recovery period is short and relatively pain-free.

What can I expect after the treatment?

You will be encouraged to walk immediately following the procedure and resume normal daily activity. However, you should avoid strenuous physical activity for three to four days. Some patients experience bruising and discomfort for 3 to 10 days after the treatment. This is usually improved with oral pain medications and compression stockings worn following the procedure. Regular use of compression stockings is recommended for management of venous reflux disease.

Endovenous laser procedures have a 97 percent success rate for venous reflux in the affected vein. Like any medical therapy, laser treatments have certain risks which your physician will explain to you. For most patients, this procedure will treat the cause of varicose veins, but additional therapy may be necessary.

If you have been diagnosed with varicose veins, you should take precautions to minimize the potential of future occurrences. These precautions may include proper diet and nutrition, regular exercise and appropriate use of compression stockings.
